The Yap - Sandiego Ancestral House is one of the oldest houses in Cebu built in 1675. The house is located in Parian, Cebu. Another name for this old, and majestic house is "Bahay ng Bato ug Kahoy."or house of coral stone and wood. The original owners of the house were Chinese merchants and it was passed on from generation to generation. The structure of the house is 95% original, with its authentic coral walls, and wooden floors. My experience there was amazing. As soon as I stepped foot into the Yap - Sandiego house, I was instantly brought into a different world. With all the antique items like the wooden benches, oil lamps, porcelain cups and plates, and an old wishing well at the backyard. It made me feel like I was in the old Spanish era.
I noticed that most of the things in the house were influenced by a lot of western elements. The Yap - Sandiego family had a lot of religious statues; one of the statues that stood out to me the most were the life sized statues of Jesus and Mary which were located in the house's bedroom. I was also enthralled by the 'Hugasanan' or the sink in English. The 'Tadyaw' is the clay container full of water, and 'plangana' or the basin is made out of wood. Another thing that caught my eye were the house's authentic, antique dinner ware. A complete set of porcelain containers, stained glass plates and cups, and old candle holders. These items captivated me the most when I explored the beautiful Yap - Sandiego Ancestral house.
For me, I believe the site is relevant to our community and to our local and international tourists because it showcases Parian's heritage. It's important to always appreciate our roots, and our past. Most importantly, it's important for us to be proud of where we came from. As Cebuanos, we should preserve our rich history and not allow the trends of modern times to hinder us from the richness of our history and promise of our culture. Our pasts are important because it made our community today. And also, our pasts give us a sense of identity. Without it, we wouldn't be the people we are today.
I care a lot about the past of my country. I am very proud of my country's rich history, amazing culture, traditions and ideals. The people like our lolas, lolos, parents, and people who lived in the old generation basically tell us we do not care about preserving our past and culture, and we'd like to prove them wrong. Until today, I still practice blessing the hands of my elders and I know a lot of kids my age, younger and older still practicing this respectful gesture. I also keep in mind what the things my nation's heroes has done for my country; like Jose Rizal, who fought for the freedom of my country and it's people. Ninoy Aquino, who freed my nation's people from Martial Law. Without them, imagine what this country would be like. Would we still be under the harsh form of government like Martial Law? Would we still be under the rule of the Spanish? I find knowledge like this important because it makes my curious mind wonder, appreciate, and reflect. An anonymous man once said and I quote, ''A person without the knowledge of their past, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.'' And for you? Why is it important to preserve, know and appreciate your country's history and culture?
